From New York to BaltimoreOur partners and their schoolYesterday was our last day in New York City and our luggage was almost packed. So, when we got up this morning at about 5:30 am we just had to finish packing up the luggage and put in the things we had needed for last night. There was no breakfast this morning, because the tube to our bus that was going to get us to Baltimore, wasn't waiting for us. After giving back the keys, all of us had to drag our heavy luggage (each weighing about 23kg) down to the underground into the tube. Not just us, but also the passengers seemed very annoyed by the space that our luggage was taking up. Unfortunately there was only time for a small breakfast, but there was time to sleep, read and relax on the bus until we would reach Baltimore - the actual reason we came here. Almost everybody slept or listened to music during the ride, so we had at least some time to catch up some of the jetlag's lost hours of sleep. At about 11 a.m. we arrived in Baltimore and we rested in a small freeway-café and had some snacks. The excitement rose as Mrs. Miller arrived in her red and white RPCS bus to fetch us and take us to Roland Park Country School. We loaded our stuff into the bus and started off towards Roland Park to meet our pen pales and to get our school stuff. Everybody was almost exploding from excitement as we stepped into the building. Our first impression was breath-taking, because the school was so big. My next class was English. I was really happy about that because it was one of the classes I had with Jan, Fee and Katy, only Vanessa was missing. In this class we had to explain to the Americans the differences between English and German grammar. We stood in front of the class and explained everything to the girls they wanted to know but of course we got help from the teacher, Mrs. R. It was fun and so cute hearing Americans speaking German or even trying it. All of us met in Mrs. M's room to get out laptops, some formulas and then we were introduced to our pen pals. I accompanied my pen pal, Abby W., to her Studio Art class and we drew hands and surrounded them with glue. Afterwards we went back to Mrs. M's room and I got my school uniform. This was a blue skirt and a white polo shirt as well as a red shorts and a grey T-shirt with "RPCS" printed on it for sports. Carrying all the new stuff Abby and me went down to the Lobby and my host dad fetched us up and we got to 'my home for 2 weeks'. I was introduced to my room and I could unpack my luggage. The door rang and it was Helen, William, Pumpkin - my host mother, 5-year-old brother William and the family's favorite: Pumpkin, the dog. The time passed quickly and suddenly all of us were sitting at the table, having dinner and introducing everyone of us. I am very glad about having such a nice, kind and wonderful host family as the Ws. Tatjana P., 10e |
