School life at RPCSMy second day at RPCSThis was my second school day at RPCS. It started very normal, like in Germany. The only differences were that I woke up in another bed and that I had breakfast with other people. At around 7 am I left my new home. We were Meghan's mom took us to school. As our house is pretty far away from the school it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to get to school. When you go on the school grounds you can see some men who take care of the traffic on a cross on the street. Especially today it was really funny. This man looked like he would dance. Then we went into the school building. A beautiful big hall and a kind woman always sits there who says 'hello' nicely. When I had to search for my locker Meghan left me. However my locker was really easy to find. Its number was 321 and it was just downstairs in front of Mrs. M's room. There I met Vanessa, Katy, Fee, Jan, Merle, Tati and Jeanette. I only didn't see Tinka and Markus. Then the first period started. My first period was Biology because it was day 1. That time Katy and I were sure that it was day 1. We didn't want to feel so dumb like we did yesterday when we thought it would be day 1 but it was day 10 - so embarrassing. But I must say that this schedule is very, very confusing. Also students from RPCS always ask each other which day it is. Each period lasts 70 minutes and there is a 15-minute break after every period. My next class was English. I was really happy about that because it was one of the classes I had with Jan, Fee and Katy, only Vanessa was missing. In this class we had to explain to the Americans the differences between English and German grammar. We stood in front of the class and explained everything to the girls they wanted to know but of course we got help from the teacher, Mrs. R. It was fun and so cute hearing Americans speaking German or even trying it. After the second period everybody in the Upper school had to go to the theater. They often have meetings of the entire Upper School there. Our hosts saved seats for all the Germans as we first had to take our stuff to our lockers. In the theater a women gave a presentation about immigrants from Germany to Baltimore. After this presentation, students were able to make announcements on different topics or to tell when the next matches of school teams would be or if some matches were won or lost. The last question was whether the girls could wear their own clothes the next day. The principal was fine with that and all girls were very excited and happy. Of course, for us this wasn't special as we do not have a school uniform. At 11:20am it was time for lunch. I was happy about that since I was really hungry. There were different things to choose from for our lunch, e.g. pizza, curly fries, chicken or healthier stuff like salads. I decided to eat pizza which I really like. As a drink, I chose pink lemonade, not knowing what it tastes like but I learned that it was the right decision. It's yummy. And the cool thing is that everything I took went on Meghan's card. So we didn't have to carry cash with us. We had enough time to talk or to do other things. This day ended with an invitiation to the headteacher's private home. Some teachers, all Germans and all hosts were invited to Mrs. B.'s for a welcome dinner at 6:30pm. Almost everybody wore the exchange program T-shirt, designed by Vanessa and we took some group photos. The dinner was delicious and it was interesting to try different specialites of Baltimore like crab cake. Mrs. B. gave us a warm welcome and she gave us a little pin with the American and German flag on it. Alexandra P., 9e |
